CHIAROSCURO
Chiaroscuro is a rethink of workmen’s stools and benches. The idea came about when observing the shadows produced by welding arcs in a dark workshop. The shapes it cast up the walls and surrounding areas were abstract and warped, flickering in and out of existence and always changing. This is what inspired a range of furniture trying to capture the abstract perspectives the welding light created.
Chiaroscuro is a dynamic looking manufacturable set of furniture that utilises both CNC and Hand Craftsmanship. Their supporting trusses are placed on angles to cast unusual shadows when exposed to light, mimicking its industrial origin in a less hazardous setting.
Playing further with the theme of light and dark, there are two material choices in the set. One is made using Ash, stained jet black, oiled then waxed. It features a dished top with soft rounded edges and legs which have been secured with through tenon wedge joints. It has then been re-enforced by supporting trusses which span between.
The other set features a solid sand Cast aluminium top, smoothed, and deburred softly to retain the beautiful qualities of its manufacturing process. This sits upon a welded framework of tubular aluminium legs which are mirrored in appearance to its wooden counterpart. To finish the full bench is lightly polished to give a rich depth of shine and make it smooth to the touch.
